That 70’s Show has proven itself over the years to be a surprisingly addictive and successful series. This DVD release of the entire first season compiles and commemorates the beginnings of the show onto four different discs, consisting of 25 episodes as well as some special features, and is sure to be entertaining to anyone, but especially fans of the series.

Right from the start of the collection, with the pilot episode, there is an understanding that That 70s Show is not a typical, wholesome sitcom. Which is not to say that it is trashy or of poor taste, but the show’s writers and producers do not shy away from honest, sometimes edgy subject matter and plots. The show revolves around the character of Eric Forman (played by Topher Grace), his friends, family, and his love interest - the girl next door, Donna, played by Laura Prepon. That 70’s Show includes into the usual content of coming-of-age sitcoms topics such as sex, drugs, and dysfunctional families. The series has a specific penchant for incorporating such serious issues in a very realistic yet lighthearted manner, thus making such subject matter neither overwhelming, boring, nor unrealistic to the audience.

Dennis Leary snarls as naturally as most actors smile. Leary's trademark ferocity and fearlessness drive Rescue Me, a series about a team of firemen struggling with their wives and lovers in post-9/11 New York City. Tommy Gavin (Leary, No Cure for Cancer, The Ref) is the guy everyone confides in, the heart of the firehouse--but he's also an active alcoholic who rages about his wife Janet (Andrea Roth) leaving him, a man guilt-ridden and literally haunted by all the people he blames himself for failing to save.

Surrounding him are a crew of vivid characters, played by a little-known but outstanding cast: Handsome lothario Franco Rivera (Daniel Sunjata) discovers he's fathered a daughter with a psychotic ex-girlfriend; Ken Shea (John Scurti) struggles to resolve his post-traumatic stress by writing poetry; Mike Siletti (Mike Lombardi), the newest guy on the team, finds love with a partner the rest of the crew finds unacceptable; Chief Jerry Reilly (Jack McGee) risks his career when he beats a gay firefighter in a bar; and several others, all multi-faceted and sharply written. Rescue Me's first season launches with a full head of steam, tackling divorce, homophobia, and male bonding in a pellmell rush.

The core theme of the show, however, is how men react to stress--how anger, bragging, competition, sex, and booze pacify their jagged emotions, pulling the firefighters together and isolating them at the same time. The first eight or so episodes rip along, spiced with high-energy scenes of fires and obscene, scatological banter. The second half of the series grows a little repetitive (beatings and steamy sex lose their vigor after a while) and some storylines stretch credulity, but the characters never lose their engaging complexity. Leary, who co-created the show and co-wrote many of the episodes, barrels through each hour like a force of nature, even as Tommy's increasingly erratic behavior threatens to alienate his family and his team. This bilious fusion of vices and virtues guarantees compelling television.

Pilot

One's a Greek. One's a geek. They both go to Cyprus-Rhodes University and they're related. Poised to become the most powerful girl in the Greek system, big sister Casey is everything an “"it"” girl should be. Beautiful... vivacious... funny and warm... except to her brother Rusty.

He's the geek; or rather he used to be way back in high school–at least three months ago. Rusty may excel in the honors engineering program, but what he really wants is what the other guys have. Gals. Pals. A scream-your-lungs-out good time. And to pledge a fraternity.

Casey is horrified and wants nothing to do with him. But when Rusty sees her boyfriend Evan making it with her rival Rebecca, her baby brother suddenly seems interesting after all.

Oddly enough, she's not the only one interested in Rusty. Evan wants him for his fraternity while Casey's ex-boyfriend Cappie thinks he belongs at Kappa Tau. His Bible-toting roommate Dale thinks they're all crazy and is praying for Rusty's soul. But the heavens seem to be ignoring his pleas because Rusty seems destined to become a Greek, no matter how socially inept he is. Which leads one to ponder... how did someone who's been nicknamed “"Spitter" come to be a pledge at all?
